Located like an amphitheater between land and sea stretching from the Sainte-Baume mountains to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and enjoying sun all year round, the Bandol appellation is in southern France. The appellation's name comes from the eponymous port town from where the wines were once shipped worldwide. Between Marseille and Toulon, less than 10 km from the Mediterranean Sea, lies the vineyards of Domaine de l’Olivette. This estate has been family-owned for over 200 years, making it one of the oldest in Bandol.
The vineyards benefit from many hours of sunshine and are protected from the strong mistral wind coming from the north by the Sainte-Baume mountains. Combined with a soil of sandstone and marl, this creates an ideal microclimate for the grapes planted here, which are hand-harvested at full ripeness. The Mourvèdre grape gives the wine an almost noble character, while Grenache contributes a somewhat fiery temperament. The Cinsault grape finally adds power and versatility.
The result is a sturdy, very vital red wine. The color is deep and intense. Aromas of ripe and stewed fruit, licorice, and herbs greet you. On the palate, you discover beautiful, mild tannins and refined aromas with hints of nuts and truffle. The finish is flavorful and long.
This Domaine de l’Olivette pairs excellently with various game roasts and red meat. Also serve it with a delicious cheese platter, as it will surprise you there as well.
